Join us to celebrate Philanthropy in our local area!
We are blessed to have a community filled with caring
folks, many of whom never seek recognition for their
generosity. Come learn more about Harley Cole, the
epitome of a man who would give you
"the shirt off his back" as we honor him and the spirit
of Philanthropy on November 17th.
National Philanthropy Day is November 15th. This gala is a great way to kickoff the Thanksgiving season.
Born 1938 in Louisburg, Kentucky, Mr. Cole graduated high school and then enlisted in the US Navy alongside several of his classmates. Stationed in Pensacola, FL, Mr. Cole acquired a local bar in a game of chance and began investing in and managing mobile home parks. In 1978 he retired from the US Navy and focused on his efforts on managing parks and making a safe and friendly community for families to live in.
In 1973 Mr. Cole continued acquiring homesites through Pasquotank County and expanded his business to open a mobile home dealership, Forbes Homes, on North Road Street in Elizabeth City, NC, where he still works today. He enjoys providing affordable living and access to safe housing for the community and continues his commitment to support families in finding a place to call home. He has served and invested in the northeastern NC community for many years. At the age of 84 he shows up to the office every day to get his crew started on the tasks for the day. Mr. Cole has continued to demonstrate his support of families, community-based organizations and the region of NENC.
In 2019 his classmates applied and presented Mr. Cole as a commissioned Kentucky Colonel, awarded by the Governor of Kentucky, in recognition of all his good will and contributions in North Carolina as a Kentucky ambassador. Mr. Cole has always said, “When an opportunity presents itself you have to know when to hold them, when to fold them, and when to walk away.”
