Albemarle Area United Way shattered its fundraising record during the 2020 campaign, raising an incredible $640,512 in pledges—$184,000 more than the previous record. During Virtual Spirit Week, AAUW also recognized Publix of Kill Devil Hills with the 2020 Spirit of Giving Award for its outstanding employee generosity and commitment to supporting local communities through United Way.

Albemarle United Way kicked off its virtual Spirit Week by honoring Albemarle Hopeline with the Spirit of Community Award. Recognized for nearly four decades of service to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, Hopeline continues to provide critical support during challenging times. The event also highlighted the impact of the Community Care Collaborative, which helps local families overcome temporary crises and achieve long-term stability.

Recognizing the impact of systemic racism and inequality, AAUW calls on individuals, organizations, businesses, and communities to work together to create meaningful change. By listening, learning, and acting with compassion and purpose, we can build a stronger, more united future for everyone.

Albemarle Area United Way’s COVID-19 Response & Recovery Fund provides critical support to residents across Northeast North Carolina facing challenges during times of crisis. Donations help fund essential needs such as food, housing assistance, childcare, hygiene supplies, and emergency services. Since its launch, the fund has distributed more than $42,000 to local nonprofits and community organizations serving vulnerable individuals and families.

Albemarle Area United Way hosted its inaugural Keel Club Philanthropy Awards Dinner on November 7, honoring Bruce and Anna Biggs for their exceptional generosity and commitment to the community. Held at the Carolina Center, the evening also featured the presentation of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine—the highest civilian honor in North Carolina—to Bruce Biggs in recognition of his outstanding service and leadership.

Albemarle Area United Way launched the Community Care Collaborative (CCC), a faith-based initiative designed to help residents facing unexpected crises by connecting them with resources and support. Partnering with local churches and community volunteers in Camden and Pasquotank counties, the CCC aims to provide coordinated assistance and improve outcomes for individuals and families in need. Monica Oakes was hired to lead the new program.

Albemarle Area United Way exceeded its 2019 fundraising goal, raising more than $450,000 and marking its strongest campaign in years. Announced during the annual Campaign Kickoff and Awards Luncheon, the record-breaking effort will provide approximately $236,000 in support to partner agencies across the region. The milestone reflects the generosity of donors, workplace campaigns, and a growing number of Keel Club members committed to strengthening local communities.

Barrett McDougald, a 12-year-old Scout from Camden, NC, was honored with the Boy Scouts of America’s National Certificate of Merit for rescuing a 7-year-old boy from drowning. Drawing on skills learned through Scouting, Barrett acted quickly during a swim evaluation, diving into deep water and bringing the child safely to the pool’s edge. His courage, quick thinking, and selfless actions exemplify the values of Scouting and community service.

Our 2019 community event was a tremendous success, bringing hundreds of neighbors together at Waterfront Park while raising more than $20,000 to support programs and services that improve lives across the Albemarle Area. Thanks to the generosity of participants, sponsors, and volunteers, the event made a meaningful local impact. We look forward to continuing this family-friendly tradition and serving our community together.
